Obituary for Helen Giardi (Lombardo)

Helen Lombardo Giardi, 99, of West Hartford, passed away peacefully March 13, 2019 surrounded by her family. Daughter of Marie Carabillo and Joseph Lombardo, she was born September 21, 1919 in Hartford, CT. She was the loving wife of the late Dr. Leo P. Giardi.
Helen grew up in Hartford and worked at Capewell Industries as an executive secretary. Early in their marriage, Helen and her daughters spent two years in Italy and Germany while her husband served as a Captain in the US Army Medical Corps during the Korean Conflict. They later moved to West Hartford to raise their family. After Leo’s passing, Helen enjoyed her work at the West Hartford Public Library until her retirement at the age of 89.
Helen was an avid reader, accomplished at knitting, sewing, and stitchery, and a wonderful cook. She had a special passion for music, singing, and dancing. In her early years she sang for wedding and funeral services. Helen enjoyed her bridge group and bowling team, and loved following the Yankees and UConn Women’s Basketball. She found much joy taking care of her granddaughter Kathryn, and in her later years spending time with her great grandchildren Will and Zoe.
Helen was a loving wife and mother, whose family meant the world to her. All who knew her could count on her wisdom, warmth and great counsel. She put others first and made those around her feel cared for and welcome. She was an inspirational woman with little ego and a large heart. May her memory be a blessing and a source of strength.
She is survived by her family who will miss her greatly, her sister Frances Garafolo, her daughters Patricia Giardi (Peter Seigle), Carol Giardi, Mary Jane Giardi (John Colebaugh), Diane Giardi (Don Tison), grandchildren Kathryn Giardi (Eric Loftus), Paul Colebaugh, Greer Tison (Nathan Maynard), Cyrus Tison (Mindy Tison), great grandchildren Will Loftus, Zoe Loftus, Cody Tison, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Helen was predeceased by sisters Elizabeth Culotta, Margaret Rucci, brother John Lombardo, and son-in-law Stephen Robertson.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, March 25th at 10:00am at The Church of Saint Peter Claver, 47 Pleasant St., West Hartford. Family and friends are invited. Burial will be private.
